Mission: Da Wang Culture Highland desires to support and encourage cultural and artistic creative development in Shenzhen and China as a whole. Located just across the border from Hong Kong and amidst the rapid development of the urban environment of the city, Da Wang Culture Highland sits in the mountain park of a small village outside of the hustle and bustle and offers artists the opportunity to work in a beautiful spacious and natural environment. Da Wang Culture Highland hosts a year-round artist residency program to support the creative and personal growth of emerging and established visual artists from China and abroad, and hopes to encourage a new kind of dialogue that provides an exchange platform between Chinese and foreign culture. While in residence all artists will share in a community of interaction, conceptual development and creative environment free from external distractions.

Cost: Da Wang Culture Highland offers artists clean A/C accommodation with Western beds and toilets, meals and studio for the duration of their stay, all located within the park at our art center. Artists must buy their own materials while in residence but will be provided with assistance in procuring these and shipping home artworks at the end of their stay. 4000 Yuan per month.

Da Wang Culture Highland also invites special guest artists to work at the center for free in exchange for artwork donation.

Accommodations: Da Wang Culture Highland is located near to the new Wu Tong Artists Village, which is home to many artists, galleries, artisan shops and cultural events. The art center has a large warehouse ceramics studio, several types of porcelain and stoneware clays, glaze room with major glaze materials, small and large scale kilns for gas, electric and wood-firing, shimpo pottery wheels, clay mixer, tools and machinery for basic wood and metal working, along with several medium/large shared studios for painting/drawing and multimedia projects.

The highland park also has several other facilities onsite including several farm-food restaurants. These range from locally reared poultry and fish, vegetables freshly grown onsite and traditional Mongolian barbecued lamb. Pick your own fruit at the top of the mountain, including strawberries, grapes, melons and lychees. Catch your own fish in one of the several lakes within the park. Hire one to three man bicycles and take the green routed paths and explored the beautiful sights around the park.

Demographic/Medium: Da Wang is open to exchange with all artists, from emerging to established, inside and outside of China. We specialize in ceramics and painting and our environment is perfect for writers and curators to work on projects, but are open to discussion with all art forms and mediums.

Benefits: All studios are 24 hour access and artists have their own communal space for dining and socializing. Free wifi access onsite. Located at the complex are also 3 large exhibition spaces for curated and resident artist exhibitions and a small library area for artist talks and presentations.

Da Wang Culture Highland continues to develop and reach out to a wider community. Early 2013 has already seen the start of a weekly artist talk with translation for better exchange between the artist group and local visitors. The Summer of 2013 will also see the remodeling of our main gallery to become better suited for resident artist exhibitions. The other big project for 2013 is the opening of our new gallery in Beijing, located around the 798 district and one of the biggest art spaces in the city. Other plans for this year include the renovation of our large 3 story building to become an art hotel for visiting guests.
