Location: Key West, Florida

Mission: The Studios offers a residency program for emerging and established artists and writers designed to encourage creative, intellectual and personal growth. The program grants nearly 35 artists each year the time and space to imagine new artistic work, engage in valuable dialogue and explore island connections. Accepted artists are granted access to a bicycle for the duration of their stay and are matched with a community member who serves as a host to assist with the success of their residency.
The Studios’ residency program is community-based and built upon the hope that visiting artists will take inspiration from Key West’s rich artistic past and present, and will engage with — and be inspired by — the remarkable people and culture that surrounds them.

Residencies are almost a full month, and run from the 16th of the month through the 14th of the next.

Cost: There is no fee for visiting artists. The Studios provides accommodation. Artists are responsible for food, travel, and materials.

Application Fee: $40.00

Number of Artists: Up to 4 artists at a time

Accommodations: Artists are housed in Conch cottages with combined live/work spaces. All artists will have their own private bathroom and bedroom/work space, access to full kitchen facilities, laundry room and an outside deck that is shared by all. At this time, we are not able to offer separate work studios to artists. In order to help us make your stay conducive to good work as possible, you must describe as clearly as possible what your space and living requirements/limitations will be when applying.

Length of Stay: 4 weeks at a time

Demographic/Medium: The Studios of Key West welcomes residency proposals from creative people, in any field, interested in a residency at our campus. You may apply as a team. Couples working on collaborative projects may apply as collaborators. Couples working on their own creative projects may apply individually and request parallel residencies.

Benefits: Resident artists are requested to give service to the Key West community in the form of a class, workshop, reading, performance or special project to be agreed upon by the artist and TSKW. These are given in exchange for their residency. The acceptance of a program depends on many factors, and program proposals may not be accepted even if an artist is granted a residency.
Our ongoing programming includes an extensive workshop season, free lectures, exhibitions, innovative arts projects, and cultural advancement ideas. To learn more about upcoming residency, program, and partnership opportunities at The Studios of Key West.

  1. TSKW is an incredibly residency, especially if you are new to the whole residency circuit.

The housing they offer you is incredible! Everything is modern, clean, nice, and new in the three houses they offer artists. The houses form a small compound, so you will have the chance to interact with other artists while in residence. Each house offers lots of privacy to work on your own work in peace as well. Residents receive a bicycle which is all you need to get around the area.

The folks who run TSKW are fabulous lovers of art and the island life, and they are always willing to help artists with whatever they may need. Key West is incredibly isolated from the rest of Florida, so this residency helps bring in interesting people for the locals to meet. The entire island is a beautiful, and there is art everywhere in Key West. It’s a great retreat.

Go to TSKW ready with a specific project ready to complete. Do all of your pre-work (research, sketches, etc), and make sure you have all of your supplies before you go to TSKW. Once you are on the island, it’s a long way to the mainland; you’ll want to be ready to work as soon as you arrive.

There aren’t really good beaches in Key West. The Keys are rock lumps trickling down from Florida, and sand isn’t natural down there. Fort Zachary Taylor in Key West is a pretty good man-made beach. Bahia Honda (a few keys up, reachable by Keys Shuttle) is the best beach in the keys.
