Here is a quiet truth about open calls: the quality of your applicant pool is mostly determined before anyone applies, by the words you put in the call itself. Programs that complain about weak or mismatched applications are very often programs whose open call was an exercise in keeping options open. Specificity is not a limitation. It's the entire job.

Write the call for the artist who belongs there

The instinct, when you want a strong pool, is to cast wide: "open to artists of all disciplines, all career stages, all media." This feels generous. In practice it produces a pile of applications from people who have no particular reason to want your program, and it buries the handful who do.

Instead, write the call for the specific artist who would thrive in your specific program. If you're a glass studio, say what equipment you have and what you don't. If your strength is solitude on a remote coast, name it — and warn off the artist who needs a city. If you serve early-career artists, define what that means. The artist reading it should feel either "this is exactly for me" or "this is clearly not for me." Both are wins. Ambiguity is the only loss.

State the unglamorous facts up front

Artists make application decisions with a spreadsheet open. The strongest applicants — the ones with options — will skip a call that hides the basics. Put these where they can't be missed:

  • What's provided (studio, housing, meals, stipend, materials budget) and what isn't.

  • Duration and dates, including whether they're fixed or flexible.
  • Eligibility, stated plainly. Geographic, career-stage, discipline, visa realities.

The application-fee paradox

A fee filters your pool — but not in the direction you think. Ask for less, learn more

Every additional required field costs you applicants and rarely improves your decision. Be honest about what you actually use to make a selection. Most juries decide on the strength of the work samples and a short statement — so don't demand a five-page project proposal, three references, and a budget from someone who's applying to fifteen programs this season. A lean application respects the artist's time and, counterintuitively, raises the quality of what you receive.

Match, don't just market
