Cill Rialaig Arts Centre

A retreat run by The Cill Rialaig Project in the restored ruins of a 1790s pre-famine village on Bolus Head, on the Atlantic edge of southwest Kerry. Founded in 1991 by Noelle Campbell-Sharp, it has seven individual cottage studios plus Tigh an Comhrá, a meeting house and library where residents can gather. Residencies run one to four weeks (most are one to two) year-round and are open to full-time practising professionals from Ireland and abroad — visual artists, writers, poets, and musicians. The cottage carries no rental charge, but residents pay a €125/week utility and waste-disposal fee and cover their own travel, food, stove fuel, and materials. Life there is deliberately basic: no television or internet, residents cook for themselves and maintain their own cottage, and the nearest village (Ballinskelligs, population under 600) is three miles away. Applications cost €40 and are judged twice yearly after the March 15 and September 15 deadlines; roughly 20–25 residencies are awarded from 100–350 applications each cycle, and successful applicants are typically scheduled 9–18 months out. The site sits on a steep cliffside amid stone ruins, so children cannot stay and pets are not permitted.
