The Erie Canal Museum in Syracuse and the New York State Canal Corporation jointly appoint two artists in residence each year to create new work engaging the Erie Canal corridor — its history, working waterway communities, and landscape. Each selected artist receives a $10,000 stipend and develops a project presented in connection with the museum and the canal system, with public-facing programming across the corridor. All visual mediums are accepted, and the program states a preference for artists local to the canal corridor and Indigenous artists.
