Wildacres Retreat

Wildacres is a 1,600-acre mountain retreat in the Blue Ridge of western North Carolina, founded as a nonprofit in 1936 by Thomas Dixon Jr. and reorganized in 1946 by I.D. Blumenthal as a center for cultural and educational programs. The residency program hosts visual artists, writers, and composers for one- or two-week stays in private cabins with shared meals, studio space, and time to work in solitude. Modest fee with financial assistance available; the program is unfussy and supportive of mid-career artists who need uninterrupted time.
