Mission: The spirit and programs of the Bemis Center for Contemporary Arts are based on the conviction that exceptional talent deserves to be supported. Our practical commitment to this belief is achieved by providing well-equipped studio spaces, living accommodations and a monthly stipend to artists who are awarded residencies. These artists come from around the world to work within a supportive community of like-minded people. The atmosphere and environment offer an ideal situation for creative growth and experimentation and encourage artists to confront new challenges.
Cost: $750 monthly stipend provided as well as housing and studio spaces (travel fee is not included).
Number of Artists: Up to 18 artists at a time
Accommodations: The Bemis Center is housed in two urban warehouses totaling 110,000 square feet. Each artist is provided with a generously sized live/work studio with a private bathroom and 24 hour access to facilities including a wood shop, installation spaces, and 10,000 square foot sculpture facility.
The live/work studios vary in size from 800 to 2100 square feet. The lofts are large and open with high ceilings and large windows. Each studio has a bed, private bathroom and small kitchen stocked with basic utensils. There are on-site laundry facilities and the Bemis Center provides bedding and towels. Artists are asked to supply their own personal items and studio cleaning.
Each studio has its own kitchen and bathroom and has been equipped with things you will need while here (linens, bedding, dishes, basic set of tools, etc.) Each floor has complementary laundry facilities. Utilities are paid by the Bemis Center and each studio is connected to the internet.
Length of Stay: 3 months, self-directed working period
Demographic: Professional artists who are not currently enrolled in an academic program,
