Mission: Red Gate Residency was founded in 2001, by the leading art gallery in China and has since been committed to the promotion of multicultural art dialogue within an immersion setting. Each year, they host over 70 artists from all over the world in the residency. In order to provide artists-in-residence with abundant opportunities to explore the local art scene, they also cooperate with art spaces and projects in Beijing and coordinate exhibitions and activities.
Cost: The Red Gate Care Package covers airport pickup, a welcome packet with everything from local maps, guide books, and a taxi guide, orientation, internet hook-up and local phone, as well as a welcome dinner for you to meet the other residents. In addition, we also keep all our residents up to date on gallery openings and other occasions. We are here for our residents regarding any concerns or needs that they may have during their stay.

Bei Gao Studio/Loft Spaces
Red Gate’s six studio/lofts are set in Feijiacun Village situated on the north side of Beijing. The site has been converted into a series of studios and apartments. Onsite local galleries include Imagine Gallery. It is a congenial and fun environment where Chinese and foreign artists are living and working together. The community is enlivened by many informal activities and frequented by many visitors. Each studio/loft is self-contained complete with local phone, internet, hot water, fridge, gas stove, bottled water, microwave, DVD, CD/Radio, washing machine, heating and air conditioning and adequate kitchen gear, furnishings and linen. Utilities and basic weekly cleaning are included. Each artist is given a bicycle to explore the neighboring small villages and more deeply immerse themselves in the local culture.
Downtown Tuanjiehu Apartments
Red Gate leases a number of modest one and two bedroom apartments in Chinese housing on the east side of Beijing close to the embassy and business districts. These apartments are situated in very local neighborhoods allowing the residents to experience the traditional and modern flavors of Beijing. Each self-contained apartment has a lounge room, kitchen, and bathroom, with all amenities including fridge, bottled water, TV, DVD, CD/Radio, washing machine, air conditioner/heating, gas cooking facilities, hot water, linen, internet and local phone. Length of Stay: 1 month to 6 months; for a residency period that lasts for 4 weeks each (no partial). Plan on applying at least 6 months in advance of planned arrival. Residents are suppose to arrive on the 2nd and leave by the 30th for months with 31 days; arrive on the 2nd and leave by the 29thfor months with 30 days.
Demographic: There is no limitation by medium nor by nationality. We work with artists who can organize their own funds and or have received grants to cover their residency.
Medium: We are open to multicultural and cross-disiplinary exchange.
Benefits: Red Gate assists all participants to connect with the art scene, meet local Chinese artists and to source art materials. We provide the necessary support and encouragement to help you get the most out of your stay here. We help get you settled, show you around, tell you where to buy the best Peking Duck, which part of the Great Wall not to go to, and where and when the latest openings are. All residents are invited to Red Gate Gallery events, including private dinners after the openings.
