Bag Factory

The Bag Factory is one of Africa's longest-running artist residency programs, founded in 1991 in the Fordsburg neighborhood of Johannesburg. Housed in a former bag manufacturing warehouse, the space provides studios to both resident South African artists and visiting international artists. The 3-month international residency includes a private studio, accommodation, and a monthly stipend. The Bag Factory is deeply embedded in the Joburg art ecosystem, with regular visiting curators, collectors, and critics.
