Penland School of Craft

Such a special place, needs more diversity

I hold such a special place in my heart for Penland, but I can't imagine myself going back because the culture there is so... strange. On one hand, it's this magical place that really does encourage so many kinds of learning and creativity, but ultimately the craft scene can be really behind the times on social issues, and Penland is no exception. Very few people of color in any sort of significant roles, women overworked while old dudes sit back and try to hook up with every 20 year old who comes through the place in the summer. It's a bummer. My recommendation: Come here when you're young and optimistic. Take advantage of all the facilities and fun available to you. Dance, go to swimming holes, have late night cereal adventures.
