The residency location is in a 100-plus-year old house in the middle of the battlefield and includes hi-speed Internet and cable and many other amenities.
The park consists of the main battlefields, memorials, cemeteries and historic buildings — support areas of the most famous battle of the American Civil War!

Application Fee: $35/Single Artist , $70/Couple Artist

Number of Artists: Up to 2 artists at a time

Length of Stay: 1 month

Accommodations: Artists are housed at the Park in a house with an included studio space, provided by Park Partners. Occupants are responsible for daily cleaning and final cleaning. Pets and smoking are not allowed. Smoking is allowed in designated smoking areas. There is a full kitchen, ample air-conditioning and wifi.

Demographic/Medium: We are interested in artists being inspired by the Park and like our past artists, it is impossible not to be inspired in some way by the majestic beauty of our parks. A performance artist with good artwork has just as much a chance at being selected as does someone who has been plein-air painting in the park for fifty years. We have a full panel of judges, who are at the top of the arts professions looking at the portfolios. This is not about taste or any agenda, it is about great artwork and giving an artist a once in a lifetime chance to create fine art in a National Park.

We accept international artists, but they must have all of the proper paperwork for the program of their own accord, though we will help them as much as possible.

NPAF is looking for any sort of artwork, from traditional landscapes, photographers, to performers, installations, films/video, as well as as writers, poets, sound artists, and new arts media. Virtually any approach can find a place at Gettysburg — what matters is vision and talent.

NPAF encourages New Media Artists as well as singers and songwriters to apply.

For the next few years we have introduced programmatic themes to our residencies (and our FOCUS ARTS series) in order to diversify the interconnection of the arts with broader demographics and further inclusion. These programs will alternate with each other. With this in mind we have set up these programmatic themes:

  1. Alembic Arts (New Media) (AAM)
  2. Arts Revolver (ARV)
  3. LiterAudiArts (LAA)
  4. U.S. Military Veteran AiRs (MVA)

Benefits: In addition to their residency, the selected artist(s) will have the opportunity to present lectures and workshops, exhibit their art and will donate art inspired by their stay in the park to Gettysburg National Military Park Museum Collections, through the NPAF. This program aims to fulfill and exceed goals for Park Arts Programs as indicated in the NPS guiding document issued for the Centennial of the National Park Service.

NPAF will also be partnering with the Gettysburg Foundation, National Park Service, Poetry Foundation, park partners, recognized museums, galleries, schools and underserved peoples organizations to promote Gettysburg National Military Park Artist in Residence Program.
